GATE Course

The material is the 2017 version of a week-long training course delivered annually by the GATE team. Over almost ten years, this course has been developed to provide basic and advanced training to students, researchers and industrial representatives with an interest in gaining competence with the GATE family of tools (see http://gate.ac.uk). The materials consist of slides to be delivered lecture-style by a teacher in person, along with all the materials required for the classroom exercises. The materials are intended to allow self-study at home, though work best in a classroom context where support can be given. The course begins with instruction in using the GATE Developer GUI, and JAPE, the GATE pattern language used to perform rule-based text processing. The various ways in which GATE can be used to work with social media are then taught, with an emphasis on Twitter. Crowdsourcing using GATE, and GATE Cloud are presented, along with Mimir, the GATE search engine. Machine learning in GATE is taught. More advanced information extraction in GATE is then presented, before moving on to opinion mining. The final two modules are presented as options when the course is taught in person; programmers can learn how to use the API, whilst others can focus on further applications.
